Washington County VINE Coverage
Virginia uses related VINE services for different records. Virginia Jail VINE through SWVRJA covers local and regional jail custody, including the Abingdon, Duffield, Haysi, and Tazewell facilities. SWVRJA confirms internet and telephone searching plus phone and email notifications. A separate VADOC VINE service concerns people in Virginia Department of Corrections care. Sex Offender Registry VINE is a third registration for people who fall within that registry.
VINELink is built around a person and an agency record. It is not a general archive of all Washington County releases. A person may leave the SWVRJA record because of bond, time served, dismissal, sentence completion, transfer to VADOC, movement to another jail, escape, or death. The event wording and the destination must be checked before “released” is described as community release.

It must not be confused with a promise that every reader can enroll in DOC victim alerts.
Search Washington County VINE Records
Open VINELink and select Virginia. Then choose “Search for a Person” and the custody service that matches the case. Use the full name or agency ID. An ID is the strongest starting point when it is known because names can collide. A facility, age, or other identifier can help resolve multiple matches.

- Compare all available identifiers and the listed facility before opening a result.
- Read the current custody status, location, ID, and available release information.
- Save the precise record before choosing a notification method.

The search result and notification controls may be session-based, so return through the stable VINELink landing page rather than saving a temporary result address.
If the person is not found, check spelling and custody jurisdiction. A county-jail-only person may appear in Jail VINE but not VADOC. Someone transferred to state custody may require a fresh search in the DOC service. A fully discharged person may fall outside the VADOC public locator's stated current-custody-or-supervision scope.
Note: A missing VINE result is inconclusive and should be checked against SWVRJA, VADOC, or the responsible court.
Washington County VINE Result Fields
Available VINE fields are notification-oriented. They help track status, but the source agency still owns the custody record. Read the displayed service name and jurisdiction with every field. The same words can carry different meanings when the person is in a regional jail instead of a state prison.

A VINE notice is a lead. For SWVRJA, compare it with JailTracker's Release Date, Facility, Booking Number, Jacket, and any hold information. For a state prisoner, compare it with VADOC's official Release Date field and present status. A scheduled date can change, while an actual jail departure may still be a transfer.
Register Washington County Release Alerts
Register from the exact matching record, not from a name-only assumption. The service may offer phone, email, or an app-based channel. SWVRJA states that Jail VINE provides phone and email notice and lists 800-467-4943 for its Virginia service. Registration is free. Keep the record identifiers available in case the event must be confirmed later.
- Open the correct person record and choose Get Notified or Register.
- Select an available channel, such as telephone or email.
- For telephone alerts, enter a phone number and create a PIN.
- When an automated call arrives, enter the PIN to confirm receipt and stop repeat calls.
- Recheck the sending service and verify the event with the custodian.
Email and app channels may be offered, but availability can vary. Do not treat a notification preference as a custody fact. The key evidence remains the event supplied by the agency and the direct confirmation that follows it.
Washington County VINE Transfer Layer
SWVRJA adds an important local layer. Its own Virginia VINE explainer connects the regional jail system with search and notification access, and JailTracker can pass a chosen record toward VINELink. Yet Virginia keeps Jail VINE and VADOC VINE registrations separate. A registration does not follow a person automatically from the regional jail into DOC.
The state workflow warns that a jail release or transfer alert can mean movement to another jail or VADOC. When that happens, confirm the departure with SWVRJA, identify the receiving system, and register again there when eligible and needed. VINE updates for the old jail registration stop after departure. The notification served its purpose by reporting an event, but a new record becomes the source for the next custody stage.
The three-service design also prevents registry alerts from being mistaken for jail alerts. Registry VINE concerns a separate legal publication. It does not replace Jail VINE, VADOC VINE, or the custody record. Use only the service that matches the person's actual status.
Washington County's regional structure adds one more check. A person connected to a Washington court case may be housed at any SWVRJA site shown in the unified Facility field. Movement from Abingdon to Duffield, Haysi, or Tazewell is not community release. Match the VINE location with JailTracker and call the listed site if the receiving facility remains unclear.
Confirm Washington County VINE Events
For a regional jail event, open SWVRJA JailTracker in Released mode and compare the person's name, Book Date, Release Date, Booking Number, Jacket, and Facility. Expand the record to inspect cases, charges, bond, sentence, court, arresting agency, and holds when present. A hold or new facility can show that custody continued elsewhere.
For a VADOC event, use the Inmate & Supervisee Locator. Search by seven-digit DOC ID when known or by first and last name. The public tool covers people in VADOC custody or supervision and can show a shift from an institution to a district office. Its exact field is called Release Date. While the person remains incarcerated, that date is forward-looking and can change.
The Washington court portal can explain a bond order, dismissal, sentence, or other legal outcome. It does not prove physical departure or remove another hold. When an exact historical jail event matters, request SWVRJA's existing final release transaction rather than asking VINE to act as an archive. A focused request should identify the person, approximate dates, Booking Number or Jacket, arresting agency, and case. Ask for the final release date and time, recorded type, destination or receiving authority, and hold-release notation when maintained. The request seeks existing fields, not a new narrative. That distinction helps the custodian locate the right transaction and preserves VINE's proper role as an alert service.
Washington County Federal VINE Limits
VINE does not track federal Bureau of Prisons custody. For a sentenced federal person, use the BOP locator by register number when possible. A BOP result with Location shown as RELEASED means the person is no longer in BOP custody. It does not rule out federal supervision, state custody, or immigration custody.
A federal pretrial person may be controlled by the U.S. Marshals Service and housed in a local or state facility. USMS does not offer a comparable public historical locator, so the federal court order and a focused USMS records request are the proper routes. For immigration custody, use ICE's Online Detainee Locator. It covers current detainees and people released from ICE custody within the prior 60 days, which makes a later no-result inconclusive.
Jurisdiction can change more than once. A regional jail departure may lead to USMS, BOP, or ICE, and none of those later stages is tracked by a continuing Jail VINE registration. Read the arresting agency, holds, court docket, and receiving authority before choosing the next locator. A BOP or ICE release means departure from that agency's custody only, not the end of every legal obligation.
