Abingdon Facility Release Paths
The Abingdon Facility is the first local check for a Washington County jail booking. A person may leave after bond, dismissal, time served, sentence completion, or another court-authorized event. The booking can also end because the person moves to the Duffield, Haysi, or Tazewell Facility. Other paths include transfer to the Virginia Department of Corrections, another jail, federal custody, or immigration custody. Those are custody changes, not proof that the person returned to the community.
The regional record must be read in parts. The Facility field identifies the SWVRJA site tied to the result. The Release Date records the end of the displayed booking episode. Expanded Cases, Charges, and Holds areas may explain why the booking ended or identify another agency. A bond entry alone is not enough. It may show that release was allowed, yet another hold can keep the person in custody. When the destination matters, ask Abingdon staff for the recorded release type, destination, and receiving authority.
Search Abingdon Release Records
Use the official SWVRJA inmate-search gateway as the source path, then open its JailTracker application. The gateway title stresses current inmates, but the linked tool also has a Released setting. This matters because a person who has left the booking will usually no longer appear in Current mode. The same search covers every authority site, so the result must show Abingdon in the Facility field before it is treated as an Abingdon record.

Abingdon Release Record Fields
A released-mode row can supply several keys for one custody episode. Some fields may be blank, and the public application does not promise that every record carries the full set. Record only what the matched result displays. The most useful fields are the ones that identify the booking, the facility, and the recorded departure.

Do not carry an SWVRJA identifier into another system as if it were universal. VADOC uses a seven-digit DOC ID, courts use case numbers, and federal systems use their own identifiers. Keep the booking number beside the Abingdon result and use the correct matching key in each later search.
Abingdon Releases Are Regional
Washington County does not run a separate sheriff jail roster identified in the research. SWVRJA operates the county-relevant search. Its four-facility design is more than an administrative detail. A Washington County case can be housed outside Abingdon, and the unified locator deliberately exposes the Facility field so users can see that difference.
Match the physical site to the Washington arresting agency or court case. A move from Abingdon to the SWVRJA Duffield Facility, Haysi, or Tazewell remains within the regional authority. A later release row may close the Abingdon booking while a new current record identifies the receiving site. If the online fields do not show the sequence, call both the last listed facility and the apparent receiving site. Staff may limit what they disclose by phone, but a precise booking number makes the question clear.

Verify Abingdon Transfer Outcomes
If the record suggests state authority, use the VADOC Inmate and Supervisee Locator. Search by seven-digit DOC ID when known or by first and last name. An institutional or local-jail-under-authority result points to continuing VADOC custody. A district-office result supports that confinement ended and community supervision began. It does not replace the exact Abingdon release transaction.
Virginia Jail VINE is a useful second check for an Abingdon custody change. SWVRJA confirms online and phone access through its VINE program. Yet a jail notice can report release or transfer in language that needs more review. Jail registration also does not move automatically into the separate VADOC VINE system. For a federal hold, the Bureau of Prisons locator fits sentenced federal custody; the U.S. Marshals Service may control a federal pretrial episode. ICE uses its own detainee locator. Each search answers only for its own jurisdiction.

Virginia law does not require a requester to cite FOIA, but the request should be reasonably specific and seek existing records rather than ask staff to create an explanation.
Identify the person and booking. Ask for the booking sheet, the final release transaction or log entry, release date and time, recorded release type, destination or receiving authority, hold disposition, and routine adult initial-intake booking photograph, to the extent those fields are kept. Virginia FOIA generally calls for a response within five working days, though the response can produce records, invoke a cited withholding, provide nonexempt parts, state no records were found, refer the requester, or use a lawful written extension. It is not a guarantee of full production within five calendar days.
Charges are limited to actual and reasonable access, search, supply, and duplication costs at the lowest reasonable cost. Ask for an estimate. A deposit may be required when anticipated charges exceed $200. SWVRJA publishes no fixed release-record fee, so the actual estimate controls.
Confirm Abingdon Community Release
A strong release statement uses more than a missing current-roster entry. Match at least two identifiers, then preserve the displayed Release Date and Facility. Check holds and any receiving-agency notation. If the destination remains unclear, obtain the existing transaction or speak with the facility. Use precise language. “SWVRJA recorded the end of the Abingdon booking” is supported when the correct released result carries a date. “Released to the community” needs a destination field or custodian confirmation that rules out transfer. That distinction protects the accuracy of the record and reflects how a regional jail works.
